Day 1, Part 1: Edinburgh Castle to Leith Links, Edinburgh

Virtual Walk: Scotland 2021 5th January 2021:  73.90km virtually walked today of 8854km.  2.5% of 467 people's totals submitting 2955.91km. Route 1A: Edinburgh to Traquair Our journey starts in Edinburgh on the iconic Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, which looks out over the capital city of Scotland from the summit of the volcanic plug which it has occupied for centuries. It towers 80 metres from the rock and is visible for at least 10 miles in every direction; a great vantage point from which to protect the city, which replaced Scone as Scotland’s capital in 1437. Before we head down the first section of the Royal Mile on our great adventure, we’ll spend a little time enjoying Edinburgh’s famous fortress, at the pinnacle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 1995 and includes the Old Town and New Town. How Did the Virtual Challenge work?

People couldn't walk or visit our beautiful Scotland during the pandemic of 2020/21. Fiona and I (Tracey) embarked upon this challenge because we are members of a global organisation called My Peak Challenge . We thought it would be fun to set up a virtual route around Scotland and walk it together, taking in a lot of the sights, using our individual daily distances added together! It was a challenge focusing more on learning about Scotland although it was driven by physical input. We created it initially for the local group we are part of, Peakers Scotland, but then we ran it for the global Peakers too. We used a % of participants' distances and then posted how far we’d walked together, and what we passed on the way. We provided photos, history, and facts etc en route to make it a bit more interesting, well hopefully that's what we achieved!! You'll see the progress and % at the start of each day's post. It is a virtual route, and what we plotted might not be as ...

Who are We?

Welcome to Peakers Scotland Virtual Walk Challenge: Scotland! During 2020, the year when the COVID pandemic affected so many lives and our ability to explore our world, we decided to embark on a virtual walk of Scotland with a difference.  We initially walked our first version with our Peakers Scotland Members before launching version 2 for our global Peakers to enjoy in January 2021.  This blog contains the contents of that challenge, just a bit of fun, 'travelling' and learning about Scotland from home using daily walk distances to propel us around our route.  The next post explains how we worked it. Peakers Scotland is an official ambassador group for My Peak Challenge  (MPC), a global fitness and lifestyle programme founded by actor, Sam Heughan, which began in 2015.  There are 140 ambassadors groups at present representing Peakers in many countries and their activities across the world.  Our aim is to be the best possible version of ourselves, in term...
